The “Reckoner” that was part of the band’s live sets sounds nothing like the “Reckoner” on the album, which includes the lyrics “in rainbows.” When the band returned from touring, it decided the song needed a second part, and then a third one; eventually it discarded the original. For “All I Need,” Mr. Greenwood said, he wanted to recapture the white noise generated by a band playing loudly in a room, when “all this chaos kicks up.” That sound never materializes in the more analytical confines of a studio. His solution was to have a string section, and his own overdubbed violas, sustaining every note of the scale, blanketing the frequencies.
“The first time we ever did ‘All I Need,’ boom! It was up on YouTube,” Mr. Yorke said. “I think it’s fantastic. The instant you finish something, you’re really excited about it, you’re really proud of it, you hope someone’s heard it, and then, by God, they have. It’s O.K. because it’s on a phone or a video recorder. It’s a bogus recording, but the spirit of the song is there, and that’s good. At that stage that’s all you need to worry about.”
Pitchfork: Speaking of the visuals, why isn’t there a DVD of this tour? Do you ever look up yourself on YouTube just to watch audience members go nuts? Thomas Bangalter: We are really excited by the idea that so many different people captured a video of their experience of the show in their own way. The thousands of clips on internet are better to us than any DVD that could have been released.
Thomas & Thom both share a love for Youtube.
I’m sure all of you have seen this but I can’t get enough of how hilarious/genius it is.
One of the goals set for ‘In Rainbows’ was to prevent the album from leaking on the internet beforehand, as had happened with the previous three albums. Colin: “It felt like a gigantic risk. Like Mission: Impossible, almost. We destroyed all CDs after every day of recording. And on the master we’d always write a name which would probably nobody would listen to if we had lost it; ‘Eagles: Greatest Hits.’ ‘Kula Shaker Demo’s.’ ‘Phil Collins’s Hip Hop Covers
Frantic Thom Yorke vocals, guitars tuned down to Drop-A, a hardcore drum part and heavy bass action. Oh Radiohead!!! This is my favorite track off of the Bonus CD from the boxset that everyone has been waiting for. This track is like Bodysnatchers taken to a new level. Radiohead is so badass.
It was 2002, my sophomore year of high school and my friend who just graduated gave me a cd full of bands
that I still listen to today during a time when all I listened to was the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Incubus. Minus The Bear, The Planet The, and Menomena were on that cd. All bands from the Northwest, Minus the Bear from Seattle and The Planet The and Menomea from Portland, the hipster haven for those Green indie-lectuals. Minus The Bear I consider to be a major part of my soundtrack of my life. The Planet The were an awesome prog synth band that surprised me.
And Menomena I band that I fell in love with after hearing this song:
I had the pleasure of seeing Menomena perform live this past Friday and was blown away by them. They reminded me of Van Der Graaf Generator whenever singer, Justin Harris would play baritone sax and play his Moog Taurus, a staple synth of 70 prog rock bands. Menomena is a band that I see going places in the future. They have a sound that is so pop with their amazing 3 part harmonies and multi-tasking instrumentation that is tasteful. The drummer, Danny Seim is a gentle giant that pounded the drums with such ease and established grooves that were linear and reminded me of a percussion section in an orchestra. The keyboardist/guitarist/glockenspier, Brent Knopf provided the band with a class and sophistication through his well thought piano parts that Debussy or Gershwin would enjoy. Overall Menomena is a band that, “musicates”, striking a balance between technical musicianship and pop craftsmenship while leaving space for the imagination to fill in those gaps.
Radiohead covers Ceremony by New Order!!! This is the most amazing thing ever. This is one of my favorite New Order songs and this soldifies my faith in Radiohead as being the greatest band in the world today. They also covered Bjork’s “Unravel” and The Smiths “The Headmaster Ritual”. Tis a good day.
Here is Thom, Colin, & Jonny spinning on the BBC Breezeblock during the Kid A days. Apparently Thom Yorke owns the entire Warp Records discography. I personally love the fact they open with Louis Armstrong, St. James Infirmary.
Sébastien Tellier has been likened to the famous Todd Rundgren, with his versatility and abilty to grasp and fuse pop music with extreme virtuosity. He reminds me of Vincent Gallo meets Jon Brion and of course Serge Gainsbourg. Here is the fantastic track that apparently Radiohead ripped off on “Reckoner”. The famous Tony Allen, Fela Kuti’s drummer plays drums on this track as well as on Sébastien Tellier’s album, Politics, he beat Damon Albarn, take that The Good, the Bad and the Queen. Take note of the gorgeous and lush strings that work so well with the drums and bass.
The official video for Sébastien Tellier – La Ritournelle (Mr. Dan’s Mix) by director Ace Norton, who also directed the new Simian Mobile Disco video for Hustler.
And finally the one and only, “African James Brown”, Mr. Fela Kuti featuring Cream’s Ginger Baker:
It is 1:10 AM EST, are you staying up all night to wait for the morning in the UK? I am! We all have waited way too long for a new Radiohead album, let us all rejoice!
1:28 AM – EMAIL with Download link!!! RADIOHEAD – IN RAINBOWS!!! Listening!!!
1:54 AM – 4 Tracks in, the basslines are amazing, Arpeggi is gorgeous, weaving guitars, solid drumming.
1:59 AM – All I Need – Is Questlove playing drums? Phil Selway has let the inner groovemeister out. Hypnotic grooves & a lot of glockenspiel.
2:02 AM – Faust Arp – Beatlesque. “Julia”
2:05 AM – Reckoner – whoa this does not sound anything like the older live version they use to play. So many vocal harmonies for a Radiohead album. The string arrangements are gorgeous.
2:10 AM – Neil Young would be proud of this album. I was hoping for more a of dub/reggae vibe after Jonny Greenwood said for 6 months straight all he listened to was the entire Trojan Records Catalog.
2:14 AM – Colin & Phil really shine on this album. I am impressed how tight they are. Jigsaw Falling Into Place is a prime example. Very motorik, Neu! sounding.
2:18 AM – In Rainbows comes to a close, Videotape. Wow Phil’s drumming.
Okay, time for this to all sink in. I shall give this another listen in the morning with fresh ears.
Cheers Radiohead.
