MUSICVISION PHOENIX: Twenty Songs That Changed Our Lives

A fantastic journey into Phoenix’s musical psyche – twenty tunes that changed their lives and influenced the way they sound. I love the way they romanticize and philiosophize in that oh-so French way about Curtis Mayfield and Kenny Rogers. You can really hear the little production techniques and samples that they strive for in their music in these songs. I especially love the 2nd track, Evie Sands’ “I Can’t Let Go” – an epic 2 mins of pop magic that Branco said he and Daft Punk use to cover when they had their band “Darlin” (the name that came from the Beach Boys tune) together for a summer in their teenage years. Such an amazing list of tunes.

Phoenix x Shuttle

Shuttle is a remixing/producing machine – from working on his own tracks or remixing tracks under Passion Pit’s name, he is just constantly pumping out tracks. Listen to this great reworking of “Love Like a Sunset” – LOUD. Nate promised Asian Dan an exclusive mix so be on the look out for that soon!

“Our good friend Shuttle sent us this fantastic remix of “Love Like A Sunset” and we’d like to share it with all of you. As well as releasing records as shuttle, he also plays drums in Passion Pit as “Nate”! His new album will be out later this year.”-Phoenix Diary

Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection)

I am so happy for Phoenix – after years of putting out amazing music they have finally received the recognition and respect they deserve. And now there is is proof by having all their contemporary musical peers remix / re-vision their music. Genius business model – that is genuine, sincere, and just a great way to showcase the depth of their music. Looking forward to the Two Doors Cinema Club, 25 Hours a Day, and Boombass remixes.

I have never been a fan of Animal Collective – interesting take on this epic journey of a tune. Animal Collective turns the song into a meditative, Indian sounding tune with Thomas Mars’ vocals looped over like a mantra over some tabla sounding percussion.

Check out what Animal Collective has to say about Phoenix here.

Phoenix x Devendra Banhart

Interesting reinterpretation/re-visioning of Phoenix’s epic tune. Devendra and co turn “Rome” into a sentimental, introspective tune of a lost love. Check out what Devendra has to say about Phoenix here.

Unreleased: Phoenix – Jetplane (Live)

Here is a live unreleased track from Phoenix that they played at the Southside festival in 2005, Jetplane. It was slated to be on It’s Never Been Like That but didn’t make the cut. It is definitely a different vibe for them and a b-side sounding track. Thomas Hedlund (drums) channels his Steward Copeland at some points in the tune to give it a very Police-y sound. Thoughts?

Emil & Friends x Phoenix x Michael Jackson: Girlfriend on Girlfriend

Emil finally found some friends, Phoenix the band of Summer ’09 and the late, great Michael Jackson. This is a cover/remix/re-vision/mash-up by the Todd Rundgren of the Blogosphere that proves what an immense talent he is. Emil turns these tunes into a New Edition sounding feel good track for the summer. Love the guitar solo towards the end. I visited this digital garage rocker’s studio last week and heard some new tunes and all I can say is I am excited for everyone for an Emil & Friends album 🙂

Asian Dan Interview: 25 Hours A Day

My intern Sam was able to get in touch with 25 Hours A Day for a brief Q&A/Interview. Check out what 25 Hours A Day has in store, including another remix for Phoenix’s next single, “Fences”.

Asian Dan Interview: 25 Hours A Day

Who is 25 Hours A Day?

25had is me, Pierrick Devin. Some people said that my tracks sounds
like a band but it s a solo project. I did remixes mostly, so far…

How could you describe your music?

It s a kind of mix between indie rock and dance music.

What are your main musical influences?

When I was 15 I was really into “French touch” bands like Daft punk, Cassius etc… And at the same time I was listenning to pop bands like Supergrass or rock bands like Sonic Youth, weezer and Pavement. These days I really love all the DFA or DC recordings releases, I’m also listening to classics bands like Talking Heads, Liquid Liquid or
Suicide. I like some garage bands too : Jay Reatard is great, the Black Lips etc…

How would you describe your relationship with Phoenix?

We are friends. I first meet them when I was working as an assistant in plus xxx studios. We spend a month working on the mixing of their 3rd album “Its never been like that”, in fact I was patching some
audio gear, line up the tape recorder and making coffee and we became closer. They shared many mp3 with me, I discovered a lot of music thanks to them. One day during this period, they listened to a track I was working on and they really liked it so they asked me to remix their track “Long Distance Call”. I was really excited and nervous at the time. It was my first remix.
