Asian Dan Interview: Poney Poney

Antoine and Flo from Poney Poney were kind of enough to answer a few questions for Asian Dan. Find out what it was like to work with Xavier and Para One and what some of their favorite tunes are at the moment. Their new EP is out now on Institubes. I can’t wait for their pop drenched album.

Asian Dan Interviews: Jean Nipon

1. Who is Jean Nipon? What is your background? What is it like to be part of the Institubes family?
I’m a DJ, producer, and omelette eater.
I used to be drummer for some straight edge bands, then more emo or noise.
Institubes is such a great team, cuz we’re all different but we share the same love for ghetto music and shitty F.M. music. Its like: we do mainstream music but for specific people 🙂

2. What are your influences, musical or otherwise?
My main influence is girls, how you get them and how they throw you away. Then its a mix between Descendents, Technotronic, Don Caballerro, Prince, Johnnie to, Minor threat, Knut Hamsun, Saul Steinberg, Céline, KRS one, Tyree Cooper and some Joe Walsh. The best if you want to do some house music its to listen the complete opposite; like this you have more chance to create something original.

3. What is your DJ philosophy? Your production style?
When I play I always try to avoid playing the obvious stuff. The challenge is to entertain the crowd with some obscure gems. Like an old piano house track or maybe throw some 70’s hard rock. Anyway if the girls keep jumpin’ its all good. So whatever I play I must please the ladies. When I produce I think “Can I play this tune without thinking” so its often a matter of reduction. Less hi hat, less synth, less breaks. Tryin’ to obtain the core of a good dance track. It never come easy.

4. What are your top 5 songs that make you want to dance?
Oh boy! Ok so for this moment it would be:

1-Gemini- Stand Up
2-Prince – Pop Life
3-Jess and Crabbe- In Your Ear
4-James Gang – Walk Away
5-Beatles- Twist and fuckin’ Shout

5. What are you listening to right now that you can’t get enough of? What is the next big thing?
Well right now I don’t know . Everyday I discover some old electro disco jams with some crazy sounds into, so I’m not excited about a lot of new things; but wait oh yeah I’m into hardhouse again !! Dudes like DJ Trajic or Less Furious CZR. For me this music from the past is still the next future. Now the glam electro pop and guitar stuff are on the top, but I think the answer will come from the ghetto music.

6. Future plans?
Next will be the “Eurogirls go Baltimore” Vol. 2 with DJ Orgasmic and many guests? It will be hugely stoopid? And on September my ep “Wild at Heart” on Institubes.

NASA Audio Dept.

NASA records the sounds of Saturn

NASA’s head engineers in their Audio Department:
Aphex Twin – Windowlicker
Daft Punk – Touch It / Technologic
Para One – J’aimerias Bien

Apparently Windowlicker was the track that inspired Daft Punk to write Discovery, as it showed the infinite possibilities within electronic music. This live version of Technoligic is very reminiscent of Aphex Twin with the laser beam like synth sounds and of course robotic vox. Para One is going to be the next Aphex Twin so everyone take note and watch out.

Para One – Naissance des Pieuvres

Para One has quite a diverse sonic personality that rivals Aphex Twin. There is something so haunting and warm about his score for Naissance de Pieuvres, something very similar to Boards of Canada and early 70s movie synth soundtracks by Wendy Carlos and John Carpenter.

DANGER.

Danger is the future of this French Touch revival. Justice pioneered that distorted heavy metal dance music but that can only be taken so far and ripped off by many. This is exactly what happened to Daft Punk, Alan Braxe, Cassius, Stardust in the late 90s, everyone began taking their sound which led to a rise of mediocre dance tracks. Danger fuses the nostalgic synth sounds of early video games with slap bass, distorted guitar/synth creating this epic sounding dance music, cerebral dance music.

Danger is releasing his first EP on Ekleroshock Records (Ekleroshock Records) in a few months with a remix by DatA. Danger just posted a new track on his myspace, Revolte at 22H10, so check it out.

This is my fav track by Danger fusing 90s Freestyle future female robot vocals with Rick Wakeman-esque weaving synth lines puncated by a tight drum and power chord rhythm secion. Try to figure out the lyrics. It is some Dada shit.

Danger – 11H30

Danger, Para One, and SebastiAn are at the forefront of this electro revival. Cerebral Dance Music for all!!

Sceanrio Rock – Both Gotta Move On (SebastiAn Remix)

SebastiAn and Para One are 2 of the new french touch artists that will be making some great tracks in the future and will definitely be making a name for themselves. Para One can be the next Aphex Twin but hipper. Para One has just finished scoring NAISSANCE DES PIEUVRES which showcases a more intellectual and introspective side to his music.

NAISSANCE DES PIEUVRES

On the other side of the world, down under the Midnight Juggernauts are creating a new sound of shoegaze cinematic disco funk, just think if Alan Braxe & Kevin Shields decided to start an epic synth rock band in the 70s. Midnight Juggerenauts are a Justice fav and are opening up for them on their upcoming US tour. I’ll be at their show on Oct 20 in NYC.

Midnight Juggernauts – Shadows

Giorgio Moroder would love David Rubato, a Frenchmen classical trained in jazz piano who decided to start making dance music. This track “Circuit” is a live recording which is very unorthodox for a dance track these days. Notice the great slap bass. Funky. David Rubato is treating and manipulating all the sounds in real time. David Rubato is releasing a 12″ Single of “Circuit” that includes sheet music so that you can all play along and cover this tune. Check out his myspace where he posted some new tracks.
