Fly Lo slips into his jazzy acoustic side with the help of Erykah Badu on “See Thru To U” off his upcoming album “Until the Quiet Comes” out Oct 2 on Warp. Look for more cameos on the album from Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Thundercat, Niki Randa, and Laura Darlington.

The one and only Guillermo S. Herren aka Prefuse 73 hooked the blog up with his favorite sounds of 2011. He couldn’t keep it down to 10 cause he is a punk so enjoy.

1.”O.P.N.”_ Replica” : This is a perfect example of making a great ‘follow up’ record to a record that was already good.. Flipped the production up, abandoned previous t.m.s and succeeded… Muy ‘fucking’ Bien!!!! = I listen to it every day…<3

The Stepkids have made some big moves in 2011 with their self-titled LP which came out on the iconic Stones Throw Records this past fall. The Stepkids are that great moment when musicianship, impeccable songwriting, and a strong sonic and visual aesthetic all intersect – a very rare and difficult thing to tastefully pull off these days. The gents put together their favorite albums of the year which I strongly co-sign. Be sure to check out some of my favorite cuts from some of these releases as well as an amazing collaboration the Stepkids did with their labelmate, Jonti.

Thundercat is proving to be quite the versatile musician – bass player extraordinaire, songwriter and vocalist. Thundercat is showing that he is part Squarepusher, part The-Dream, and part George Benson sprinkled with Flying Lotus’ magic dust/DMT.

Thundercat is the man behind the massive bass playing on Flying Lotus’ “Cosmogramma” as well as being a session player that has sat in with Erykah Badu and Snoop. Flying Lotus has now taken him under his wing and produced his solo album coming out on Brainfeeder soon. “For Love I Come” is the first track we get to hear off the album – it is a space -jazz-soul cover of George Duke’s “For Love I Come” swimming in a sea of Fender Rhodes and slick bass-playing.

I had the privilege to see the mighty Flying Lotus live a few weeks ago at Hard Turkey Soup NYC with A-Trak and Tiga – this time with Thundercat on bass and a live drummer. It was great to hear Flying Lotus’ DJ/Live set accompanied by such stellar musicians. Flying Lotus brings his futuristic fusion jazz space funk to the BBC via an amazing live session at the legendary Maida Vale studios. This is an amazing live session that gives a nod to some of the great Jazz Fusion acts such as Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report but of course with Flying Lotus’ genius touch. Also they play one of my fav tracks of his “Tea Leaf Dancer”.
