Teen Inc. is a LA based duo making Balearic funk slo-jams in the vain of Dam-Funk but a little more shimmery and not as sexy. It is like Chillwave but with musicianship. Their productions border 90s smooth jazz with some psychedelic/prog touches. I guess slap bass is acceptable again in music. Buy a limited edition 7″ here.

Atoms For Peace, the only supergroup these days that seem to make any sense and actually can surpass the original bands that each member originates from. Yes, I said it. Forget RHCP and Radiohead – Thom & Flea should just continue touring and making music with Atoms For Peace. Just watching the 2 of them onstage have a dance off with each other throughout the night showed how much fun they can really have with their music. There is a definite return to innocence for Thom and Flea as they flail around to these new arrangements of Thom’s solo album “The Eraser”. It is as if they are taken back to their days when they were just starting a band. Overall a rare treat to see such musicians of great caliber, Flea, Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, and Mauro Refosco – all on one stage. It goes to show that musicianship is something that still shines through in this crazy industry.
Flying Lotus opened both nights, literally destroying the soundsystem with his sub-bass goodness. Highlights of his sets were him dropping Mr. Oizo “Stunt” & “Postif” and then closing with an a capella of Burial into Radiohead “Idioteque”.
If Atoms For Peace are playing in a city near you – go. Or if any of you are making your way out to Coachella, make sure to stick around for the final night.
Greetings Blogosphere. As you all know I have been raving about Penguin Prison for the past few months for his ability to craft such polished and catchy pop tunes with substance and conviction. April 8 marks Penguin Prison’s first full band live debut – a new incarnation of these pop songs in a live and raw environment at NYC’s Mercury Lounge. I am quite excited to see what a live band will do to these polished tunes. Chris Glover aka the ringmaster behind Penguin Prison was kind enough to answer a few questions about his musical endeavors.

Asian Dan Q&A: Penguin Prison
1. Who is Penguin Prison? How would you describe your music.
Penguin prison is me. I’m penguin prison.
I would describe my music as pop music by someone who cares.
2. What was your first musical memory?
I remember having a Michael Jackson doll and I rememeber my parents having the thriller record and playing it on a fisher price record player. I remember taking the Michael Jackson doll around with me. One of my earliest foggiest memories is of me holding the Michael Jackson doll and being at NBC studios behind the scenes because my best friend’s mom was a producer at NBC.
3. What are your influences, musical or otherwise?
I am influenced by people I know mainly. For some reason it helps me to actually know people who make music and see them doing it firsthand. It makes me feel like I can do what they are doing.
4. Last year I feel marked a new era of pop within the indie scene – an amalgamation of electronic, pop, rock with acts such as Grizzly Bear, Miike Snow, Passion Pit and Phoenix all leading the way in this “Intelligent Pop” music scene. I feel like you are definitely going down a similar path. Thoughts on this? And what sort of vision/perception are you trying to put out of yourself through your music?
Intelligent pop is a good term probably. I am trying to make pop music but goof pop music. There is a difference between the backstreet boys and Michael jackson. Both are labeled pop but everyone can tell the difference.
Hopefully the vision of what I am trying to put out there will slowly be revealed as time goes by.
It is finally upon us, Todd Edwards collaboration with Scion A/V. A massive collaboration with fantastic remixes, it is hard to pick my favorite – but of course I am quite partial to the Joy Orbison. All I have to say is download, listen, dance, enjoy, repeat. God bless Todd. Tweet your love to @ToddEdwards3000

Shoegazey, 70s tinged, stoner-synth rock via the one and only Midnight Juggernauts. “Vital Signs” is off their forthcoming album “The Crystal Axis” out 5.28.2010
Finally, Hey Champ’s debut album “Star” is coming out onTownie Records after a year or so of honing and crafting their futuristic synth pop rock sound. It is fresh from being mastered by Nilesh Patel from the Exchange in London and will definitely have a kick and pop to it. I had the pleasure of hearing the entire album and it is quite a journey – a synth pop rock and or roll odyssey. My personal favorite is the title track, “Star” a tune that sounds like The Buggles meets Devo and Sparks with a modern pop vibe and sensibility. This is America’s take on this whole hipster synth pop rock, but with a lot more atittude and American rock gusto. So take out your convertible, put on your denim jacket and wayfarers and get ready to drive around with your top down bumping this album.
Sign up to download “Neverest” a straightforward pop rock tune that reminds me The Police meets ELO circa “Time”. Also download some other tune called “Cold Dust Girl” 😉

This is could be considered blasphemy by some. To remix Steve Reich is an outrage. Somehow Röyksopp does this quite tastefully, retaining Steve Reich’s vision and sound while adding their signature sound. A well balanced re-visioning of an amazing track.
If you have 2 hours to kill check out this crash course interview with Steve Reich brought to you by the Red Bull Music Academy.
“We wanted to make our own version of this beautiful piece of music, adding beats and bass, and at the same time stay 100% true to the original arrangement. However, for our needs, we respectfully (although some might say cheekily) altered the whole song from a 3/4 to a 4/4 time signature. Not unlike how The Orb did it in their 90’s classic Little Fluffy Clouds. Actually, editing and experimenting with this piece of music turned out to be great fun!
So much fun, in fact, that we wanted to depart further from the original, and create yet another version. This time, using the tone quality of the original sample as a starting point, we embarked on an analog-fueled journey into repetitive madness and harmonic bliss.” –Röyksopp
