MSTRKRFT Live on Jimmy Kimmel

The concept of MSTRKRFT performing live with real synths and real drums is more exciting than it happening in reality. It just lacked energy and N.O.R.E. just seemed out of it, busy checking his Twitter. Also whoever was doing the sound sucked, the vocals were too loud in the mix. Pretty cool seeing JFK behind a synth and in front of huge bass amps again (RIP DFA1979). I wonder who was drumming. Overall mediocre.

The Horrors – Sea Within a Sea

I’ve never really listened to this The Horrors until I heard this track and I love it. From what I have been reading on the interwebs, this is an atypical new sound for The Horrors. “Sea Within a Sea” is a dark krautrock pop tune that at first listen reminded me of Neu! meets “The Rip” by Portishead which is interesting because I found out that their new album Primary Colours is produced by Geoff Barrow of Portishead. The 2nd half of “Sea Within a Sea” with those major arpeggiated chords sound very similar to the end of “The Rip”.

Peaches x Soulwax

Peaches upcoming album seems to be shaping up into quite a big name collaboration project, with productions from Simian Mobile Disco, Gonzales, Digitalsim, Drums Of Death, and the one and only Dewaele Brothers. It’s like Peaches is the 2009 female version of Tiga’s “Ciao!” with all these collaborations.

Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve Radio 1 Minimix

Erol Alkan and Richard Norris crafted this Psycho-delic minimix of some great psychedelic 60s tunes, pop tunes as well as a few edits of their own. You really see how much music Erol knows and that he just isn’t a bangertastic DJ/Producer. Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve just recently released “Re Animations Vol 1” a collection of some of their “re-animations/re-visions/re-edits/re-mixes” of tracks by The Chemical Bros, Simian Mobile Disco, and Late of the Pier just to name a few.

Also checkout a little clip Glenjamn took of Erol’s set from Hard 13 from this past Friday. Erol drop’s Daft Punk’s ATW but with an unknown track under the a capella. Anyone know what track it is? I love that acid bassline.

La Roux X Skream vs Foamo Remix

Foamo provides a re-edit of Skream’s remix of La Roux’s In for the Kill. Foamo turns the track into a Burial-esque sounding track with a little more kick, definitely an end track to a rainy night. Speaking of Burial what is he up to I want more music from him.

Tracklist at the end of the interview.

Here is a new track by Emil & Friends that is an introspective and folky feel good tune. The guitar work at the end reminds me of John Frusciante.

Asian Dan Interview: Emil & Friends

1.  Who is Emil & Friends?  How would you describe your music?

Emil & friends has been called everything from a band to a boyfriend/girlfriend duo to one guy with multiple personalities. At this point, and most likely until a tour, there will just be me doing what needs to be done. So I guess its more the multiple personalities… More specifically, I play the instruments, write, sing, record, produce, mix, design strange graphics and animations (All these done usually while wearing a costume of some sort). When I decided to release something I picked the Emil & Friends label because it sounded average, showed I wasn’t taking myself too seriously, and that I wanted to collaborate and start a band in the future, should it happen that way. I figured as long as I made the music good enough it would stay afloat. It could always change to a reference from some cult movie. That seems standard these days.

A description of the music? Its kind of like buffet style servings that vacillate between nylon/electro dream fountain pop and driven crunchy disco dirt while stopping to sample flavors of soul, punk, trip hop and whatever else slips by undetected.
